* Keep area clean with a gentle cleanser and ideally a toner. Avoid using bar soaps; they hold and spread bacteria.
(Depending on your skin type, salicylic acid, colloidal silver or tea tree oil may be some ingredients to look for in your cleansers and toners to help fight any bacteria buildup and/or inflammation. Always be cautious when trying products with new ingredients as to avoid allergic reactions or sensitivities. If using any essential oils like tea tree, make sure to dilute in a carrier oil such as coconut or safflower.)
* Gently exfoliate area once a week (instructions below). For some areas of the body, perform a 2-3 Round Exfoliation (instructions below). Ask your Aesthetician if this procedure applies to the particular wax you received. Some facial waxes may not apply, or some skin types may not do well with so much exfoliation.
*Always moisturize area after you cleanse and/or exfoliate with a recommended moisturizer from your Aesthetician or Dermatologist.
(Aloe Vera can be a nice cooling and soothing moisturizer.)
*Apply an SPF of at least a 30 every 2 hours on those areas that may be exposed to the sun. The skin will be more vulnerable after waxing.
* Gently work little circles over waxed area for 1-2 minutes with an exfoliating washcloth or glove, and a gentle cleanser. Use a clean glove/wash cloth with each exfoliation to avoid the spread of bacteria. Avoid using bar soaps; they also hold and spread bacteria.
(You may also use a cleanser with exfoliating beads, or make a simple paste of sugar and honey. Add a little coconut oil to your paste to help moisturize and soothe the skin. Ask your Aesthetician or Dermatologist about quality cleansing and exfoliating products.)
* After exfoliating, always moisturize the skin.
Exfoliating helps remove buildup on the skins surface from dead skin, oils, make-up, impurities in the air, etc. causing blockages in the hair follicles. It also helps new hairs move out of the follicle as they grow, instead of getting stuck underneath the skins surface causing ingrown hairs and therefore possible infections. After a wax, your hair follicles are open and more vulnerable to the environment.
(Ask your Aesthetician if this procedure applies to the particular wax you received. Some facial waxes may not apply, or some skin types may not do well with so much exfoliation.)
* Immediately after waxing, let skin rest for a day, then exfoliate gently the next day. Do this "skip a day, exfoliate a day" pattern 2-3 times, as long as your skin feels okay in doing so. Pay attention to how your skin feels after the second exfoliation round. If any rawness or irritation is increasing, do not perform a third round of exfoliation. We don't want to over-exfoliate the area and cause more irritation.
* Make sure to keep cleansing the area on the days you are not exfoliating, especially for intimate waxes. Cleanse area with a gentle cleanser and clean wash cloth. Avoid using bar soaps; they hold and spread bacteria.
* Moisturize the skin immediately after each exfoliation, and after each cleanse.
* Once the first week passes, return to a normal exfoliating routine of 1-2 times per week, as instructed in "How to Exfoliate" above.
